Bhasikiti Ratizirai: How NGO Policies and Donor Demands Impact Savings Groups
23 November 2024
Today, as I reflect on my journey, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and a deep sense of inspiration. My story is not just about me; it's about the love, sacrifices, and dreams of those who came before me. It begins in a small, humble rural village in Mutasa, northeast of Mutare, in Zimbabwe's Manicaland province—a place that shaped the very essence of who I am.
Six days after I was born, my grandmother made a choice that changed the course of my life. I was a twin, and my mother, facing the daunting task of caring for two infants, needed help. Without hesitation, my grandmother adopted me as her own. It was an act of pure love and sacrifice, one that would lay the foundation for everything I have become. I still remember her gentle touch and the way she nurtured me, scheduling my feeding and providing for my every need, all with love that I now know was boundless.
My grandmother and father worked tirelessly as subsistence farmers, but they never wavered in their belief that education was the key to a better life. They instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge. These were not just lessons; they were life principles that I carry with me to this day. In everything I do, their influence is a constant guide.
As I grew older, my parents faced a challenge that would shape my future: finding a safe way to save money for my secondary school fees. In those days, banks were a luxury we didn’t have access to. But my parents were resourceful. They even went as far as hiding money underground—literally burying their savings, all so I could attend St. Faith's High, one of the best schools we knew of.
Looking back, this is where my passion for financial inclusion began. I saw firsthand the struggles they went through to secure a future for me, and I knew there had to be a better way.
I remember vividly one day, asking my grandmother why they were willing to make such great sacrifices. Life could have been simpler, easier even, if we had just accepted our rural reality. Her answer has stayed with me and drives me to this very day. With unwavering determination, she said, "My grandson, your grandfather and I never had the chance to get an education. By sending you to school, we are actually investing in our own education because whatever you shall learn from school, you shall indeed come back and teach us in our own language and improve our lives in the process. By investing in your education today, we are also laying a good foundation for our great-grandchildren, whom we expect to have a better life and should never have to endure the hardships that we went through."
Her words hit me like a lightning bolt. Education was not just about personal advancement; it was about changing the narrative for future generations. It was her legacy, one that she was passing down to me, so I could carry it forward and inspire others.
That’s why I do what I do today. Every step I take is in honor of the sacrifices that were made for me. Every initiative I champion, every community I work with, it all stems from a deep-rooted belief that we owe it to those who came before us to use our knowledge to uplift those around us. They may not be here anymore, but their spirit lives on in the work we do.
If my story resonates with you, I would love to hear yours. Maybe you, too, have experienced the love and sacrifice of family. Maybe you, too, feel that burning desire to give back, to uplift, to create a better future for those who come after us. Together, we can share our journeys, our lessons, and our insights to help each other grow and make a real, lasting difference in our communities.
This isn’t about fame or wealth. It’s about honoring the sacrifices of those who paved the way for us. It’s about building a future rooted in love, hard work, and the power of education.
What’s your story? I’d love to hear it. Let’s come together, share, and work toward a brighter future. We are the continuation of a legacy that started long before us, and it’s our turn to pass it on.
